Controls and Ruffle help

How to focus the player, move, interact, use fullscreen, preserve saves, and troubleshoot Alpha 1.5 in Ruffle.

Last reviewed: July 11, 2026 · English Alpha 1.5 unless noted

Quick checklist

  • - Click Play, wait for the SWF preloader, then click inside the game frame.
  • - Most navigation uses on-screen arrows, objects, and dialogue choices.
  • - Use the downloaded SWF with Ruffle desktop if browser graphics or memory fail.

Click inside the frame before troubleshooting input

  • - Mouse clicks drive movement, hotspots, and dialogue.
  • - The page must load the SWF before the game receives input.
  • - Fullscreen is most reliable after the player has focus.

Start and focus the player

Press Play on the homepage and allow the SWF to download and initialize. The first load can take up to a minute; refreshing during the preloader restarts that work.

After the title screen appears, click once inside the game frame. If on-screen arrows or dialogue stop responding, click the frame again before changing browser settings.

Movement and interaction

Banned from Equestria is primarily mouse-driven. Click on-screen arrows to change locations, click characters and environmental hotspots to interact, and choose dialogue responses by clicking their text.

Some minigames use repeated clicking or timing. Follow the prompt shown by the game; do not assume the keyboard controls a character continuously like an action game.

Fullscreen and mobile limits

Use the site's Full screen control after the game has loaded. Desktop Chrome or another current desktop browser gives the frame more room and is easier for small Flash-era hotspots.

Phone browsers can load the player, but the interface was not designed for touch screens. Rotate to landscape, zoom carefully, and prefer the documented community Android package only if browser controls are impractical.

Black screen, filters, and memory errors

Wait for both Ruffle and the game's own preloader. If the frame stays black, reload once, close memory-heavy tabs, and temporarily disable aggressive blockers for this page.

Old Flash filters can render differently under emulation. If a visual effect blocks progress or the browser runs out of memory, download the SWF and open it with the official Ruffle desktop application.

Save behavior

Flash saves use local storage associated with the player and browser context. Clearing site data, switching browsers, or moving to a desktop player can make an existing save unavailable.

Before testing alternate endings, keep a clean branch save in the same player. Do not promise that a browser save will automatically transfer to a downloaded desktop SWF.
